The Business Coach: How to Choose, What to Expect

A business coach can work with you in two key areas to help you become a more effective and successful business owner.

The first key area is: Systems & Structures. When a business has missing systems or structures it can cause the income of the business to go up and down each month. Sometimes the systems exist, but they are just not functioning properly. A business coach can help you develop the proper systems and structures for your business so that monthly income becomes more consistent as you expand your business.

The second key area is: Mindset. This is the most important area of all because our beliefs, thoughts and views dramatically affect the kind of results we are able to produce. The existing mindset is often insufficient to allow us to get where we want to be in our business. An effective business coach will have the tools and training needed to help develop a strong mindset. The largest increase in business often occurs when the coach helps the client discover a limiting belief. A limited mindset can also limit business success. Remember, for a business to expand, so must the mindset of the business owner.

What should you look for in a business coach?

One very important thing to be clear on is that “Busi- ness Coaches” are not “Life Coaches”. There is a difference. The best way to choose the business coach most suited for you and your business is to schedule individual consultations with several different coaches. The consultation should focus on their business background with questions such as:

  • Have they owned businesses of their own in the past?
  • Were those businesses thriving successful businesses?
  • How did they acquire their business knowledge?
  • What do their clients increase their revenue by, on average, after working with them?

Consultations with several coaches will provide an opportunity to find out how they approach business, as well as learn about their coaching style. Having a coach is a tremendous asset to you and your business, but it can only be an asset if you trust your coach and have a solid connection and relationship with that person.

You should be aware that an effective coach will:

  • Hold you accountable and not let you off the hook with excuses. You want someone who will “hold your feet to the fire”, but do so in a com- passionate way!
  • Be honest and direct even if it is not what you want to hear.
  • Customize their coaching and their program to your industry and to your particular business. You do not want to have a “cookie cutter” program or coaching model.
  • Provide a coaching program that is at least six months or longer in duration. A program that is less than six months will not allow sufficient time to produce break-through results in a business. It takes the business coach at least six months to: investigate the business and uncover what is is not working, develop the necessary systems and structures, have the owner implement those changes and allow the time needed to produce results.

Once you have found a coach, what should you expect

  • Once the coaching process begins, you will notice that there is work involved.
  • You and your coach will set up specific and measurable goals for your business. One of these goals must be financial; it is the only true way to measure the growth of your business.
  • You and your coach will develop a plan. This plan will serve as a step-by-step guide to achieve the goals that were set up. The plan will include the steps needed to achieve the goals on time and on target.
  • You and your coach will have things to figure out, things to create and systems to put in place. Again, it is important to remember that there is work involved and that there will also be times when you get confronted.
  • Expect a sense of empowerment and accomplishment. I have had my own business coach for over ten years and there is nothing more empowering than having someone who will not let you quit, and will never, ever give up on you! It is truly one of the most amazing experiences!

Top two tips for any business:

  • Have a digital calendar! Many business owners have limited their own success by limiting what they can manage. A calendar is the most basic and one of the most important systems that provide support for success.
  • Rebook your clients. If you have a service business, one of the most important skills you must develop is how to rebook your clients. If you are not rebooking at least 90% of your clients, then your system is not functioning properly. This will result in a lot more work for you. It will also cause your income to be inconsistent.
